I walked into the small jewelry shop and was stopped in the customer catch, that air lock between the street and the shop. I shook the door a few times, inviting the scowl of both the half-dozen customers and clerks inside. I noticed the buzzer button and pressed it. No one acknowledged me for a moment, so I buzzed again. Projecting annoyance with the skill of a mediocre stage actor, an old man went behind a desk and pushed a button.
