Some people said ‘You alright?’ without demanding an answer. It took me some time to realise the saying is a form of recognition and acknowledgment of somebody’s presence. I got ‘interrupted’ many times when I said ‘yeah, good’ to the supposed question ‘You alright?’. Then sometimes when I didn’t answer, there would be a second of silence indicating I was meant to answer, or say something. It drove me mad trying to read what people expected me to react.
