It need not! The hallmark of a good suit is a great fit, and that often is understated, but I’m willing to wager a dollar that many of the guys who go the extra mile on suits “do it wrong” in some way and betray a vanity that isn’t necessarily charming. I disagree about the fabric being the main thing. I think it matters (comfort, durability and certainly appearance) and if you have a choice get the superfine wools and wool/cashmere blends, but in terms of how sharp you actually look, I am convinced it is about fit and feeling confident.
