You have to be specific. If you weren’t, then tell him that you don’t like the way the shirt smells when it has been outside, and you would appreciate it if he didn’t wear the same shirt to bed that he wears during the day because the smell bothers you to the point where you can’t sleep. As others have said, it is possible he can’t smell it to the extent that you do, so he probably doesn’t understand just how offensive it is to you.
