This gives you a hint as to why an engine wears. To be more specific it’s the temperature change in the engine. Sometimes an engine overtemps and you can quickly have a problem. But if an engine behaves you can have it on wing for many years before it needs an overhaul. That is because engineering has developed it to stand up to that high temperature without incident. Sometimes engines operate in a harsh environment and are susceptible to erosion and/or corrosion which can be another factor. My vote goes to high temperature and time for wear for most engines.
